Huge volcano that featured in James Bond film fires rocks 2.5 MILES into sky after massive eruption

A huge volcano is continuing to send rocks more than TWO MILES into the sky days after it began to erupt. Japan's Shinmoedake, which featured in 1967 James Bond film You Only Live Twice, began to spew ash several days ago . But the eruption became more violent this morning and could last for several months, according to experts.
The volcano is 600 miles from Toyko on the southern island of Kyushu. The entrance to Shinmoedake, which has a 1,421-metre peak, has been restricted.
The Japanese Meteorological Agency said large explosions occurred at 1.52am and 4.27am local time today.
Dramatic TV footage previously showed smoke and ash billowing high into the sky, with lava visible deep inside a crater at the mountain.

NHK public television said the smoke and ash had risen as far as 3,650 metres in the peak's strongest eruption in seven years.
"The mountain has been erupting for a while, but this is the strongest day yet," said an official at the Japanese Meteorological Agency. "This will go on for a while."
Japan has 110 active volcanoes and monitors 47 of them around the clock.
In September 2014, 63 people were killed on Mount Ontake, the worst volcanic toll in Japan for nearly 90 years.
In January, a member of Japan's military was struck and killed when rocks from a volcanic eruption rained down on skiers at a mountain resort in central Japan.
